Why did you choose your DJ name ?

Well, that's a funny story!

Before I massively got invested into the music scene, I only used to go to a few events here and there - Clashmouth record fair being one of them.

It must have been 2019, just before Covid hit and Pete Cannon had just come out with N4 Records. I was aware of the name via his UK Hip Hop stuff and the hardcore/jungle label wasn't on my radar. I had a great chat with him and snagged one of the few test presses of N4002 which was not going to hit shelves for a bit.

Fast forward to present day, I kept those conversations going and, after convincing the chap to give me his personal test press of N4001, I became the only person to have all his releases on test press. In response, he came out with one line;

"Might as well call you Charlie test press"

Yep, I will take that. So, here we are!

DJ Biography / overview / Bit about yourself and how you got into Djing and where you have played:

Musically, I was into drums - all things to do with interesting patterns that make you go OOO! Mostly with a focus on metal drums, where all the aggression and more technical rhythms come from, might I add.

Ignoring the dull build up to where my taste was being refined - I got in tight with Fright Night Radio, a darkside specialised radio station. At the time, I loved my jungle but, had not quite collected enough 93 classics to be a "darkside dj".

After taking the reigns for a bit with FNR, my name got picked up by a few stations, like The Underground Lair, Alphawave Radio, Only Oldskool and, in turn, Energy1058.

I have played in a few spots but, my most notable will always be Dissonance Bristol at Cosies - not just because the event is run by a very good group of people who are special to me - due to the crowd erupting over every banger played!

I have a forthcoming party in Derby along several up and coming producers/djs and a few well established ones also. My choice to select only vinyl has proven a great asset for the current state of the music scene.

What or who are your influences to play what you play?

I would feel like I am offending lots of people if I were to list them off however, in true Fright Night Radio style, I will say one big influence that has made a large impact on my current style.

Demonic Possession Recordings // Dead Beat Records - this is the darkest of darkside through the likes of Shadowman (formerly FX) and KutMasterK.

Without them, I wouldn't be doing what I'm doing now!

What other intrests or hobbies do you have apart from Energy1058?

I operate on a simple schedule of work, music and sleep - we are ignoring caning a lot of alcohol...

I do spend a lot of time at raves in the London area so, if you are ever around, always come and say hello!
