Gaba Ghanoush is the spicy alterego that encompasses all performance projects: gabber vinyl dj, band accordion, synth and vocalist to drag horror panto cabaret dame!
DJ Biography / overview / Bit about yourself and how you got into Djing and where you have played:
I started djing at under 18s rave events in Kent when I was 14 back in the early 90s. I collected jungle / dnb vinyl mostly but kept a broad range of music for my side job as a mobile disco DJ. I moved to Bristol in 2000 to emerse myself in the amazing music scene and still live here. Over the years have played at some of Bristols grimiest venues! I had a spell living in Reading and Newcastle Australia, where I organised and played at my own themed free parties. Then moving back to Bristol I joined Renegade Radio and played a weekly show for 8 years, using digital controllers to expand my genres and mixing techniques, as well as dabbling in MCing . In the last 5 years I have expanded my live performances into a fully emersive visual horror cabaret show where I play donk and ravecore sets, with elaborate costumes and completely wild drag performances. I have regular sets at Balter, Boomtown, Shambala, Cabarave and Donk Stop Believing. Since relying on CDJs for playing out I have become a bit disenchanted with DJing.. so.. In 2024 I got my technics repaired, spent more than I should have on old vinyl from discogs and I'm thoroughly enjoying the challenges, risks, and beauty that vinyl is giving. Thanks to Kryptonn and Neil S, im now a regular on ENERGY1058.COM . It is a perfect outlet for my rekindled love for vinyl DJing, and provides me with huge inspiration from the other Djs on rotation. Expect high risk, 3 deck mixes spanning 90s / 00s jungle, dnb, hardcore and b2b sessions with long time DJ mates Benny, Average Joe, Monster Mark, Jordan and other TFC and RudaRavers crew.
What or who are your influences to play what you play?
I grew up on 90s tape packs such as Desire, Hardcore Heaven, One Nation, Heat etc.. Andy C has always been the one I looked up to for selection, high impact double drops and teases. I must also mention these names who I've followed intensely at times over the years: Dan Fix, Slayer, Mandidextrous, Dillinja, AFI, Atari Teenage Riot, Prodigy, Scamp, Anorak, Ronin, Bong Ra, Noisia, Bailey, Kryptonn, Hellfish, Producer, Pantera, NOFX, Igorrr, Jim e scavenger, System of a down, A.M.C and loads more.
What other intrests or hobbies do you have apart from Energy1058?
I'm a vocalist, accordion and synth player for "The Mixed Dips" band. We play live versions of 90s rave songs. I'm learning production using a hardware only set up. Busy family life, surfing, swimming, raving, metal gigs, costume, dance, mountain biking, science fi books and working on renewable energy projects.
