Full name
Mark Chatterton
Why did you choose your DJ name ?
The name seemed to choose me rather than the other way round. I tried for years to be Skidmark but repeatedly ended up on flyers as Monster or Monsta, so in the end I kept it.
DJ Biography / overview / Bit about yourself and how you got into Djing and where you have played:
I didn't have much in the way of dance music influences as a kid - My sister listened to 80s pop and Bon Jovi. Some influential moments were, my dad getting a new car and it was delivered with Fat of the Land in the CD player, finding Hixxy's happy hardcore show on Kiss FM, and tuning into weekend pirate radio.I didn't start accumulating masses of records until a bit later on, around 2001. Picked up a Mampi Swift EP in Beggars Banquet in Kingston... I actually didn't have any decks, I just started buying records and listening to them on my dad's hifi record deck, because at the time I didn't know about rave tape packs so there was basically no other way for me to get drum&bass. How to mix was a bit of an enigma to me until the youth club in Twickenham started some absolute beginner DJ lessons, then grabbed some mediocre Citronic PD1s and got cracking. Those decks were great, we cared so little about looking after them that I was happy to take them anywhere and let anyone use them.I met Gaba Ganoush at uni in Reading in 2003. By that point everything had changed, and I could listen back to Fabio and grooverider shows online at any time of the day, go out every weekend, so things were in full swing. We DJd together at a lot of local events, little clubs and bars in Reading and a few cheeky unlicensed parties of our own in warehouses, fields or woodlands that are now totally priceless memories.
What or who are your influences to play what you play?
I was mostly into Happy Hardcore in the early days, 97/98/99. I was listening to Bonkers, and Force & Styles. I've never stopped loving that sound. At that point I only knew drum & bass as little interludes in the breakdowns of hardcore tunes, I loved the sound of those Amens but didn't know what they were. Finally found a CD and I was massively influenced by... it had Quest, Valley of the Shadows, Dred Bass, and a few other big tunes. Back then it was really hard to find out who the big names were or the big tunes were, so that CD definitely gave me a way inOnce I could get into the clubs, I just became an instant Andy C follower, we would go to Ram Records at the End and Tru Playaz at Fabric almost every month. So I had loads of tunes by the guys on those labels. Skibadee too, went to see him pretty much every single opportunity I had. His Bangers and Mash pool party at Innovation in the Sun is one of the highlights of my life.
What other intrests or hobbies do you have apart from Energy1058?
D&B is definitely my number 1 hobbie. Still going out whenever I can, like grabbing tickets to see Dillinja rinse out the classics again every few months.I like a bit of bouldering, walking, and obviously for a millennium... drinking.I don't have any website or social links as a DJ.
